Breaking Barriers in Engineering: A Conversation with Raffaella Ocone

Engineering is the backbone of innovation and the key to addressing many of the world’s most pressing challenges. But as much as the profession thrives on problem-solving, it also faces significant internal challenges—particularly when it comes to diversity, inclusion, and mentorship. In a recent episode of Notes from a NED, Samuel Kasumu sits down with Raffaella Ocone, Vice President of the Institution of Chemical Engineers, whose career journey is as inspiring as it is instructive.

Raffaella Ocone’s engineering journey began in Italy and her thirst for knowledge took her to Princeton University, USA, for advanced studies, and eventually into academia at institutions like Heriot-Watt University, University of Nottingham, and others. In her early days, Raffaella was one of only five women among 400 engineering students. The gender dynamics she navigated underscore ongoing challenges women face in engineering today, including unconscious biases and a lack of role models. Yet, Raffaella’s determination led her to break through these barriers, becoming a vocal advocate for diversity in the field.

Mentorship has been a cornerstone of her success, helping her build confidence and open doors to new opportunities. Today, she’s passionate about making engineering more accessible and ensuring the next generation has the guidance they need to succeed. Chemical engineering is uniquely positioned to address global challenges such as climate change, resource management, and technological innovation. But to achieve meaningful progress, the field must prioritize ethics, regulation, and diversity. As Raffaella states, “We need to give opportunities to many more people.”

This conversation isn’t just a reflection on Raffaella’s career; it’s a call to action for the engineering community to embrace diversity, mentorship, and ethical responsibility as tools for innovation.
