From his youth as an anti-apartheid activist in South Africa to serving in pivotal roles such as the Director General of Civicus and the International Executive Director of Greenpeace International, Kumi Naidoo’s life has been dedicated to championing social and environmental justice. His extensive experience grounds his belief in the power of activism to drive change and dismantle harmful systems. For Naidoo, activism isn’t just about mobilising people in the streets; it’s about shifting how we define power and equity across society.
“Activism needs to harness the power of arts and culture,” he says. “It can capture the imagination, foster solidarity, and help people see the urgency of change.”
Naidoo discusses how resource allocation within international NGOs remains skewed. Although 85% of the world’s population lives in the global south, most resources are still controlled by organisations in the global north. He emphasises the need to address this imbalance and ensure that funds and decision-making power are directed toward communities that are most affected by social and environmental injustices.
One of the most sobering points Naidoo raises is the issue of structural racism within international NGOs. He argues that many of these organisations are still shaped by colonial legacies, with leadership and resources often concentrated in the global north. Despite their mission statements, they frequently fall short in promoting genuine inclusivity and equity.
At the heart of Naidoo’s message is a call for civil society organisations to fully embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion. In his words, “Activism needs to be disruptive but also hopeful, envisioning a future where everyone, regardless of where they come from, has a seat at the table.” It’s a call to action for all of us to reconsider our roles, push for systemic change, and never stop striving for a more just and inclusive world.
